In 1938 the town was founded by Flora Mae Statler who named it Surprise because she “would be surprised if this town ever amounted to much”. In 1960, Surprise was incorporated into a city and originally there was only one gas station and a few homes on the one square mile town. It experienced a boom in the 90’s when tens of thousands of retirees moved into the new community of Sun City Grand which is a 55+ community located in the city limits of Surprise, AZ.
Surprise is located just Northwest of the Phoenix Metro area with a population of around 134,000 good people as of 2018. Growing from 34,000 in 2000, Surprise has made some big changes. Surprise is now the tenth largest city in the Arizona and is an easy drive to anywhere in the valley. With a variety of shopping and dining, anyone would be happy to call Surprise their home. Wouldn’t Flora be Surprised.
